Last Sunday, 19th April, on a cold dull Spring Sunday morning, the village of Alrewas in Staffordshire was transformed into a bright and colourful Spring venue as the first ever VIOLETS IN BLOOM 5K FAMILY FUN RUN attracted over 400 mums, dads, brothers, sisters, babes in pushchairs, toddlers, aunts, uncles, friends and pets galore!

The colourful array turned the village purple – the charity’s colour of choice – in celebration of the life of five-yearold Violet Mornington who tragically died of a rare blood disorder in 2013.

Violets in Bloom is a local charity born out of a family’s tragic loss. Violet Mornington was a bubbly, beautiful little girl who had just finished her first year at St Stephen’s School in Fradley – but she lost her life to HLH (Hemophagocytic Lymphohistiocytosis). Her loss has left a huge hole in her parent’s lives, but they turned their grief into something positive, to help all parents who have lost their own little angels, and have raised over £20,000 for the Histio Research Trust and Birmingham Children’s Hospital.

The first VIOLETS IN BLOOM FK FAMILY FUN RUN was hosted to raise funds to help create a memorial garden in Violet’s memory at Fradley Crematorium and first estimates indicate that the charity hopes to raise £5,000 from the event and mum Kerry certainly felt that the day was a real success.

She said: “What an incredible day!  The support we’ve had has been overwhelming and the event has exceeded all of our expectations. Our first annual 5K Fun Run was a complete success thanks to our main organisers, KP Events and our wonderful sponsors, DBMAA and supporters, Citrus Research, M6Toll and Banabay.  A special thanks goes to all of them but it wouldn’t have been anything without the support of all the volunteers and of course our wonderful 5 k runners, joggers and walkers.”

Supporter and friend Rebecca Dakin, local beauty and holistic therapist in Alrewas, used the 5K as a warm up to her next Violet in Bloom fundraising event, the Liverpool Rock and Roll marathon on 14th June.

Rebecca said: “I met Kerry and Ivan last year and I was moved to tears by their story. I would just love to help them achieve their goal and see a beautiful garden bloom in memory of Violet. Any parent would do anything to help those that suffer such a devastating bereavement and I just hope I can raise as much as I can – it’ll certainly help me when my legs start to throb!”

Due to the success, plans are already underway to turn the run into an annual event.  Photos from it can viewed at either www.violetsinbloom.org or www.kpevents.net and their respective Facebook and Twitter links on both websites.
